Tips on Relocating the Family Pet

When relocating your family, it is important to remember that even the smallest members can become stressed with the sudden change of pace.

Pets, like us, can easily feel uprooted during the transition. By providing a little extra care, your furry friends will feel safe and comfortable moving into their new home.

Here are some ways that you can ensure a happy transition:

  • Always take special care in keeping meal times consistent during the move. Pets are dependent on their owners to uphold day-to-day routines, and it is important to create a sense of continuity for them before, during and after the transition.
  • Make sure your pet is safely confined when needed. Oftentimes doors are left open during a move and your little buddy might be tempted to explore when you are busy hauling furniture. Consider finding a pet sitter or securing your pet at a kennel for the biggest days of the move.
  • If you are traveling far with your pet, consider packing a special bag just for them. A favorite blanket will provide your pet with the familiar sensations of home and a treat will remind them that they are loved.
  • Make sure to set up all of your pet’s familiars the second you arrive at the new home so that they can become accustomed to the unfamiliar space. Make a special effort to keep up your pet’s routine and you will ensure that your pet loves the new home as much as their last.
